Medan, N Sumatra (ANTARA News) - Four armed bank robbers were killed and two others injured in a police raid in the Dolok Masihul hills area, Serdang Bedagai district, on Saturday.
According to information from the North Sumatra police`s Mobile Brigade headquarters , the sweeping operation was launched to capture the suspects in their hideouts in the Dolok Masihul hills area.
The dead suspects were indentified as Taufik Hidayat, Zulkarnain, Dedi and Fauzi alias Ozi. Taufik and Zulkarnain were confirmed to be North Sumatran residents.
The suspects who sustained serious shot wounds were identified as Robi alias Robin and Azwar Dedi.
Robi was admitted to the North Sumatran police (Bhayangkara) hospital for medical treatment but Azwar Dedi`s whereabouts were not yet known.
In the exchange of fire which occurred in the Dolok Masihul area, a Mobile Brigade member named Darwin Sugeng was injured.
Sugeng was then rushed to Tebing Tinggi hospital, around 80 kilometers from for intensive medical treatment.
During the raid, the police also confiscated weapons and ammunition, including an AK-47, two M16s, two FN pistols, and 700 bullets.
Last August 15, a group of armed men stormed the CIMB Niaga Bank in Medan, capital city of North Sumatra province.
The National Police hunted dozens of people suspected of involving in this bank heist.
In another recent incident, an armed gang attacked a police station in Hamparan Perak, North Sumatra, leaving three police officers on duty dead.
Indonesia remains vulnerable to the real threats of terrorism as indicated by a series of terrorist attacks and ongoing acts of terrorist rings over the past eight years.
National Police chief General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said a total of 298 people had been killed in terrorist attacks in the country in the 2000-2010 period.
"298 people have died and 838 others were wounded due to terrorists` attacks in Indonesia in the 2000-2010 period," he said.
Meanwhile, a total of 19 police officers have also been killed and 29 others wounded during anti-terrorism operations such as in Ambon, Poso, Aceh, Central Java, Makassar, Papua and Medan.
Terrorists have not only claimed lives but also have also caused damages such as on the country`s economy, tourism and also social sector as confidence in the country dropped due to their activities.
To ginance their activity , the terrorists raised money by robbing banks or jewelery shops.(*)
